27/08/04 NIUE'S NONI IS ORGANIC, THE BEST
The noni fruit is becoming popular worldwide, with rising demands that may outrip supply. The development of Niue's noni have just started, and production, especially the harvesting of the noni fruits is already on the way with local firm NiuGro International purchasing fruits from farmers. Niue's noni have unique qualities, and is rated as the best in the world, as Niue's noni is organic. Noni grows wild in Niue, and it is estimated that over 200 square kilometres of land area where noni trees and plants grows, it is also estimated that in average at least 3 nonu plant/tree grows on a 10 square metre area. The ratio of what being harvested at the moment is less than 5 percent of the total crop, labour and access are the major constraints.

27/08/04 NIUE, ORGANIC NATION BY YEAR 2010
Niue is planning to become a organic nation by the year 2010. The Government is very supportive of this initiative and is working closely with the Niue Island Organic Farming Association (NIOFA) to draw up plans and programmes. NIOFA is utilising experts from New Zealand to develop standards which will be used for conducting audits on farms who apply to be organically certified.

19/08/04 FISHING AND NONI PROJECTS, MAJOR INJECTIONS TO NIUE'S ECONOMY
The opening of a new fish processing plant at Amanau, and the noni processing factory at the Vaiea Farm is expected to make major contribution to the Niue economy. Both projects are join ventures of the Government of Niue and the Reef Group from New Zealand. Watch this space for more details.

19/08/04 CYCLONE HETA RECOVERY RUNNING SMOOTHLY Despite the seriousness of the damage caused by Cyclone Heta, the recovery work is running smoothly, with life on the rock returning back to normal. New Zealand's initial help of NZD$5 million really gave Niue a major boost towards recovery. Some of the re-construction works are still on-going.

11/01/04 CYCLONE HETA SEVERELY DEVASTATES NIUE The new year 2004 did not start off well for Niue, last week on Monday 5 January 2004 Niue was struck by an enormous hurricane. Cyclone Heta with strong and very powerful winds of up to 300 kilometre per hour gust, including huge waves caused havoc in most parts of Niue. The Aliluki reisdential area in the capital Alofi is the area severely affected by, all the houses completely demolished with most only have the foundation left to show what was there before. The extend of the damage is enormous and officials are still making their assessment. The main infrastructure like power, water and communikcation has been damaged as well. While power and water is now working in some areas, communication will takes sometimes before they can fix it. Businesses is Niue will no doubt be affected by this. Please stay tune.
