CHIMNEY CAPS AND DAMPERS

Why you should have one

Chimney Caps are one of the most inexpensive preventive measures you as a home owner can take to prevent costly repairs to your chimney. A Chimney Cap is a device that is mounted at the top of your chimney on the flue section.

A Lock Top Damper is used similarly to the chimney cap, the difference between them is that unlike caps which can be used on any chimney (fireplaces, furnaces, gas logs, Wood Stoves, Inserts...) the damper can only be mounted on fire places. The reason being is that the damper has a handle that runs down the chimney into the fire place, this handle is used to control the damper position, you can choose to close the damper when you are not using your chimney and open it when you are. Doing so can significantly save you money on your heating and air conditioning bills. Because the chimney is a hole in the middle of your home heat and air are allowed to escape and enter, using a Lock Top Damper gives you the added advantage of closing off this passage that a regular chimney cap does not.

Chimney Caps

Caps come in a variety of sizes and have various purposes, among them are to prevent animals from entering your home which can cause unwanted noise and damage, for example birds can nest and lay eggs in your chimney, the same with raccoons, although raccoons can cause more damage than birds and are more dangerous to your interior chimney. Caps also help by preventing leaves, twigs and other derbies from entering your chimney, as well as rain. All of this can cause interior chimney damage and deterioration. If you’re not worried about debris or animals entering your chimney flue, rain is something you should worry about it is the leading cause of deterioration to chimneys, it can damage not only to your liner but to your crown as well.
