A few words about folk music . . .
Fok music of course, is the oldest form of music, the very first music that ever existed. There are as many forms of folk music as there are cultures on the planet (who knows--one day we may well discover that folk music exists on other planets as well). No living human language is without its folksongs (there may even be folksongs in C++ and Java, but I haven't seen or heard them). A comprehensive survey of folk music would consume far more megabytes than this Web site has available. Of necessity, therefore, the information and links on this page will reflect the musical interests of those who are creating it. Most of the folk music covered here comes from lands where English is the principal language, although that reflects only a small minority of all the world's folk music. The question of "What is folk music?" remains a thorny issue. Years ago, someone (perhaps Studs Terkel) asked Big Bill Broonzy if the blues is folk music. Broonzy replied something like, "I reckon so--I ain't ever heard no horse singin' it." That may be as close as we can get to a definition. A little personal prejudice: to be folk, music pretty much has to be acoustic.
